Hello, Bearcat Fan! The false springs of March reminded us this week that sunlight is fleeting in the sports world. Defeat, like the rain, whispers a better day’s name. We also learned this week that Steeley Mucken (ʼ27) is diabolically cracked at track and field.
Mucken ran the third-fastest 100-meter dash in school history at the Willamette Opener, 0.9 seconds shy of the No. 1 spot, which has been untouched since 1986. At the same meet, he set a personal record in the javelin, throwing 62.22-meters, the fourth-farthest distance in school history.
Ahead of their Feb. 27 matchup against the No. 1 seeded Bearcats, GFU lacrosse’s Instagram stated: “The Bruins were picked to finish second in the … preseason poll despite not losing a conference game since 2016. They’re determined to prove they’re still the team to beat in 2025!” They defeated the ʼCats 19-9.
Baseball swept Pacific (1-0, 6-3 and 5-3) ahead of their Pacific Northwest exodus to California. They are set to take on Pomona-Pitzer, La Verne, Chapman and Occidental through this weekend and into the next.
The Boxers danced around women’s tennis (0-7).
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor snaked past men’s golf and into the No. 4 slot at the Space City Classic. The Bearcats are home now and preparing for the Boxer Invite.
In the world of sport: Jimmy Johnson’s retiring from Fox football coverage, Sepp Blatter’s doing what he does best and Mondo Duplantis broke his own pole vault record.
Consider in the coming weeks: How’d the new basketball club do in Arizona, and alternatively, aren’t we all in our own way hunting for records — memories in the minds of loved ones, the feeling of a warm breeze in deepest winter?
