Fast Break: MSOC 2-7 nightmare, Salem falls, Zoe Heino does XC proud

Hello, Bearcat Fan! Willamette sports are now solely playing for the pride of the institution (and recruiting prospects). There are only a few home games left before another fall season fades into the archives — I’m not saying you should go, but I am saying I would be embarrassed if I didn’t. Let’s go to the news!

Whitman inadvertently absorbed men’s soccer’s wrath on Sunday (3-0) — the ‘Cats refused to give an inch to the Blues after meeting an excruciating 2-7 loss at the hands of Whitworth one day prior.

Nina Krassner-Cybulski (ʼ25) netted two more goals to draw the ‘Cats level with a visiting Whitworth side on Saturday. After conceding again, Ella Abraham (ʼ25) botched a penalty to bring the game to a close, 2-3. The next day, Abraham crushed a heroic 30-yarder to tie Whitman at the death, but the Blues snuck in a set-piece to grab the win (1-2).

Football. 23-38. Puget Sound. Yet another class of seniors stand poised to graduate not having won a conference game. BEAT PAC, BEARCATS!

Women’s basketball got off to a challenging start, falling 44-93 to the DI University of Portland. Men’s basketball ceded Salem to the Corban Warriors (67-86).

Volleyball trashed Whitman 3-1, but were swept by Whitworth. Two wins could place them in the playoffs, but only if the Bruins choke.

Zoe Heino (ʼ26) tracked, pursued and killed the No. 5 spot at the NWC Cross Country Championships. The women’s squad took No. 2 overall, the men No. 6. Regionals are in two weeks.Men’s golf blew Linfield out of the water to win the Tall Trees Invitational. Saida Seelig (ʼ26), the sole representative of the women’s squad, took No. 11.

In the world of sport: The Thorns clinched playoffs, Michael Jordan’s taking NASCAR to court, Oregon football’s still on top of the world, and Sporting CP rates their 34-goal-man Viktor Gyokeres higher than Erling Haaland.

Consider in the coming weeks: Does the new fishing club strike your fancy, are we in for a dreary basketball rebuild winter, and alternatively, how do you plan on staying warm while dressed like that? Layers, people, layers. Winter is here, and it’s not like California.
